Arturia MicroFreak USB MIDI Experimental Hybrid Synthesizer 25-Key Synth

MicroFreak is a hybrid synthesizer that pairs a digital oscillator section with a real analog filter. Sixteen oscillator modes cover everything from clean virtual analog tones to harsh harmonic mangling, including seven modes based on the open-source Plaits oscillator from Mutable Instruments and three algorithms built with Noise Engineering that combine wavefolding, phase modulation, and harmonic manipulation. Four dedicated knobs handle Type, Wave, Timbre, and Shape, so switching engines and dialing in a sound stays direct.

The 12 dB per octave analog State Variable Filter is based on the Oberheim-designed SEM circuit and offers resonant low pass, band pass, and high pass modes. It rounds off the sharper digital tones without removing their character.

A modulation matrix with five sources and seven destinations, three of them user-assignable, is programmed through a clickable Matrix knob with a light-up display and OLED readout, so you always know where a routing is going. An ADSR envelope, a cycling envelope that doubles as an LFO, and a synced LFO with six waveshapes supply the movement.

The 25-key capacitive keybed has no moving parts and tracks polyphonic aftertouch per note, which also makes it a poly-aftertouch MIDI controller for software. A dual-mode arpeggiator and 64-step sequencer with two patterns and four automation tracks per preset handle pattern work, and Spice and Dice randomizers add variation. Play it monophonically or in paraphonic mode with up to four voices. There are 384 preset slots with 320 factory sounds, and CV, Gate and Mod outputs plus MIDI, USB and clock cover connections.
