The JBL CSMA 280 is an eight-input, two-output mixer-amplifier rated at 80 W per channel for two-zone commercial installations. Eight input channels accept microphones, guitars and playback sources through euro-block and unbalanced RCA connections, and two outputs let separate areas run at separate levels. A Hi-Z switch brings the built-in output transformer into circuit for direct 70V or 100V speaker lines, while the amplifier also powers 8 ohm and 4 ohm loads for shorter local runs. Voice-activated ducking on channels 1 and 5 lowers background music the moment someone speaks into a paging microphone, with a rear trim pot setting the trigger threshold. Those channels can also serve as priority inputs, muting all others through a switch closure, which also wakes the unit from sleep so an announcement is never cut off. Sleep mode powers the amplifier down after roughly 30 minutes without signal. Two auxiliary outputs carry the input mix to additional amplifiers as the system grows. Phantom power at 27 VDC supports condenser microphones, and an RJ45 port works with a JBL CSR-V wall volume control. Illuminated rings around the knobs keep the panel readable in dark closets.
