Audio Technica AT4040 Professional Cardioid Condenser Microphone+Protective Case

The AT4040 is a large-diaphragm side-address condenser built for studio, broadcast, and sound reinforcement work where the source has to come through unchanged. Its externally polarized capsule is tensioned for a natural response curve, and the symmetrical transformerless circuit keeps distortion low and transients accurate.

The numbers explain the range of jobs it handles. Self-noise sits at 12 dB SPL, quiet enough for soft vocals, brushed snare, and distant room capture. Maximum input reaches 145 dB SPL, or 155 dB SPL with the pad, which covers electric guitar cabinets and horn sections. Dynamic range is 133 dB with an 82 dB signal-to-noise ratio, so the same mic can chase a whisper and a shout in one session.

Cardioid pickup favors what sits in front of the capsule, controlling feedback on stage and improving separation between players tracking in the same room. The 80 Hz high-pass filter and 10 dB pad are switchable on the body.

Construction backs the electronics. A nickel-plated brass acoustic baffle keeps the element stable, and the open symmetrical housing limits internal reflections that would color the sound.

It runs on 48V phantom power and includes the AT8449 shock mount, a dust cover, and a protective carrying case.
