Chauvet DJ Xpress-512S Aluminum DMX Lighting Interface for ShowXpress Software

Xpress-512S connects a computer running ShowXpress lighting control software to a DMX rig. It handles one full DMX universe of 512 channels and unlocks an additional ArtNet universe, for 1,024 channels total from a unit that fits in a jacket pocket.

The standout capability for working operators is standalone playback. You can store one show inside the interface and play it back with no computer attached. That means the laptop can stay home for a repeat event, or serve as a fallback if the machine running the show goes down mid-set.

The housing is aluminum rather than plastic, which matters for a device that lives loose in a gig bag with cables and clamps. Inside, built-in electrostatic discharge and ground loop protection circuits guard against the electrical problems that show up when you connect a laptop to a DMX line running across a stage.

It is hot-swappable and reconnects automatically within seconds, so a bumped USB cable does not end the show. Compatible with Windows and Mac OS X. Connecting additional interfaces adds more universes when the rig grows.

Power comes over USB at 5 V, DMX output is 3-pin XLR, and refresh rate is 40 Hz. At 0.2 lb and 2.9 in long, it disappears into a laptop bag. A practical tool for mobile DJs, small production companies, houses of worship and installers programming permanent rigs.
