Presonus StudioChannel Studio Channel Recording Vacuum Tube Mic Preamp Strip

The Studio Channel is a single-channel strip that puts a Class A vacuum tube preamp, a VCA-based compressor, and a three-band parametric EQ in one 1U rack space. It handles microphones, guitars, basses, keyboards, and synths, which makes it the piece you track everything through when you record one part at a time.

The preamp stage builds on the BlueTube design, with a high-output 12AX7 vacuum tube running at double the voltage of most preamps in its class for high headroom and full tone. Separate gain and tube saturation controls take you from transparent and clear through warm to edgy and overdriven, so a thin vocal or a flat direct bass gets character before it hits your converters.

The compressor is a fully variable VCA circuit with threshold, ratio, attack, release, make-up gain, plus auto and soft modes. VCA circuits are known for musicality and very fast attack, which means slap bass, snare hits, and loud vocals can be tracked hot without clipping. A pre/post compressor switch moves the EQ either side of the dynamics stage.

The three-band parametric EQ uses custom-designed amplifiers for clear highs, deep lows, and open midrange. The mid band has variable Q for controlling bandwidth, and the high and low bands switch between peak/dip and shelving. An 80 Hz high-pass filter, 20 dB pad, phase invert, and a precision analog VU meter for gain reduction and output complete the front panel, in a rugged metal chassis with ultra-low noise.
