Product Description
The sE Electronics BL8 is a half-cardioid boundary microphone built for loud, close-range sources. Its hand-crafted 1/2 in. true-condenser sE8 capsule sits in a low-profile housing just 1.12 in. tall, so it drops inside a kick drum, under a piano lid, or flat on a stage floor without a stand or boom in the way.
Transformerless Class-A circuitry gives the BL8 plenty of headroom before distortion, and a switchable 10/20 dB pre-attenuation pad raises SPL handling from 143 dB to 163 dB. That covers a hard-hit kick drum at point-blank range. On the quiet end, low-noise electronics hold the equivalent noise level at 14 dB(A), so speech pickup, conference tables, and room ambience stay clean and detailed. Frequency response runs 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz with accurate low-frequency reproduction.
Two switches shape the sound at the source. The character switch moves between classic and modern voicings, useful when the same kick needs warmth on one session and attack on the next. The low-cut filter, switchable at 80 or 160 Hz (6 dB/oct), trims stage rumble and HVAC noise before it reaches the console.
The half-cardioid pattern treats the mounting surface as an acoustic boundary, which cuts phase cancellation and gives more usable gain before feedback than a standard cardioid lying on the floor. The BL8 runs on standard 48 V phantom power through a 3-pin male XLR, accepts the sE8 omni capsule, and mounts in The Kelly Shu Flatz Isolation System for drum work.
