Product Description

The VR1 is a passive ribbon microphone built around a hand-tensioned 2.5 micron aluminum ribbon, assembled by specialist technicians in sE's own capsule room. It has the forgiving midrange character ribbons are known for, but with an open top end instead of the dull highs of older designs.

On a guitar cab it brings out bite and edge without the harsh upper mids a condenser can add, so distorted tracks sit in a mix with less EQ work. The figure-8 pattern hears equally from front and back while rejecting sound arriving from the sides, which is useful for room miking, classic stereo pairs, and nulling out a source sitting 90 degrees off axis.

Frequency response runs 20 Hz to 18 kHz with 1.8 mV/Pa (-55 dBV) sensitivity and 135 dB max SPL, so it takes a loud amp or a drum room without strain. It needs no power and is phantom-protected, so an accidental 48V feed will not damage the ribbon. Pair it with a preamp that has plenty of clean gain to get the most out of a passive design.

Recommended sources include vocals, drum kit, overheads, room, acoustic guitar, electric guitar cab, orchestral strings, piano, woodwinds, and brass. All-metal housing and a gold-plated XLR connector hold up under daily studio use, and at 230 g it sits easily in the included shock mount. The mic ships in a wooden case with a shock mount, stand clip, and thread adapter, so it is ready to hang or stand-mount out of the box.

Features

    • Ribbon Character, Open Highs

A hand-tensioned 2.5 micron aluminum ribbon covers 20 Hz to 18 kHz, giving natural ribbon midrange without the dull top end of older ribbon designs.

    • Tames Loud Guitar Cabs

135 dB max SPL and a forgiving high end let you place the mic right on a driven cab and get a track that sits in the mix with minimal EQ.

    • Figure-8 Placement Control

The bidirectional pattern rejects sound from the sides, so you can null a nearby source or set up classic stereo room techniques with predictable results.

    • No Power Supply Needed

The passive design runs on your preamp gain alone and is phantom-protected, so an accidental 48V feed will not damage the ribbon element.

    • Ready For The Studio

All-metal housing with a gold-plated XLR connector, plus a wooden case, shock mount, stand clip, and thread adapter for mounting on any stand.
